Calculate carton volume
For dimensions in centimeters, carton volume in cubic meters is length × width × height ÷ 1,000,000. Multiply by the number of cartons for total CBM. Use packed outer-carton measurements, not product dimensions or an unconfirmed catalog estimate.
Example: a 50 × 40 × 30 cm carton equals 0.06 CBM. Twenty cartons equal 1.2 CBM.
Compare actual and volumetric weight
Air and courier services may charge the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. The divisor depends on the carrier and service. A commonly seen courier formula is length × width × height in centimeters divided by 5,000 or 6,000, but your forwarder must confirm the applicable rule.
For a 50 × 40 × 30 cm carton, the result is 12 kg using a 5,000 divisor or 10 kg using 6,000. If actual gross weight is 8 kg, chargeable weight may be volumetric.
Build a landed-cost estimate
Add product cost, custom packaging, domestic transport, export handling, inspection, international freight, insurance, duty, tax, brokerage, final delivery and a reasonable defect or contingency allowance. Divide the total by saleable units, not only ordered units.
Currency rates, duty classification and local taxes can change. Use a freight forwarder and customs professional for the final estimate.
Data to request from the supplier
Ask for pieces per carton, carton count, outer dimensions, net and gross weight, packing photos, HS-code reference, pickup location and readiness date. Reconfirm after any packaging or assortment change because the carton plan may no longer be valid.
