Custom squishy toy packaging does not have one reliable universal price. The cost depends on the pack structure, dimensions, material, printing, quantity, artwork, inserts, labels, assembly and how the finished pack changes the master carton.
For a buyer, the useful question is not “How much is custom packaging?” It is “What information does the supplier need to quote the exact retail pack and its logistics impact?”
This guide shows how to build that request without inventing a price before the specification exists.
Define the selling job first
Packaging should solve a retail problem. A clear bag may keep a low-price impulse item visible. A header card can add hanging display and branding. A printed box can support gifting and provide more space for instructions or required information. A display carton can help a retailer merchandise several units together.
Start by writing down:
- sales channel;
- target retail price position;
- shelf, hook, counter or parcel use;
- required barcode and label space;
- brand presentation;
- destination-market information that must appear on the pack;
- whether the product must remain visible.
This prevents paying for a complex box that does not improve the sales channel.
The main packaging cost drivers
Pack structure and material
A simple bag, header card, folding carton and display box have different material and assembly requirements. Thickness, surface finish, window construction and inserts can also change the quote.
Finished dimensions
Large packs use more material and can increase volumetric freight. A package that looks inexpensive per unit may create a larger logistics cost if it reduces pieces per master carton.
Printing and decoration
Number of printed surfaces, color requirements, special finishes and print process can affect setup and unit cost. Ask the supplier to separate any one-time setup charge from recurring per-unit packaging cost where possible.
Order quantity
Custom packaging normally has its own economic quantity. The product MOQ and the printed-packaging MOQ are not always the same. Ask both questions explicitly.
Artwork readiness
Print-ready artwork and an approved dieline reduce back-and-forth. If the supplier must rebuild artwork, create a dieline or make several revisions, development time can increase even before production starts.
Manual assembly
Inserts, labels, tying, multi-piece sets, display assembly or special orientation can add labor. Define the final packed unit, not only the printed material.
Ask for a packaging quote in layers
Instead of one combined number, request a quote that makes the commercial choices visible:
- product unit price under the selected quantity tier;
- standard packaging included with that SKU;
- incremental cost for the requested custom packaging;
- one-time setup, plate, sample or development charges if applicable;
- final pieces per carton;
- master-carton dimensions and gross weight;
- production or approval time added by the custom pack.
This structure makes it easier to compare a standard-pack order with a private-label version.
Packaging cost and freight cost are connected
A buyer can save a few cents on a package and still lose more money through poor carton efficiency. The opposite can also happen: a slightly stronger pack may reduce damage or make the product easier to sell.
After the final sample is packed, confirm:
- packed unit dimensions and weight;
- inner-pack quantity if used;
- pieces per master carton;
- master-carton dimensions;
- gross and net weight;
- total carton count for the order.
Then recalculate shipping with the carton and shipping cost guide. Your forwarder should provide the current freight basis.
Private label is more than putting a logo on a box
A private-label project can include brand name, barcode, item number, color names, warning text, importer or responsible-party information, instructions and country-specific requirements. The supplier can help with production files, but the buyer remains responsible for defining the market requirements that apply to the finished product.

Do not print before the product is frozen
If product size, style ratio, accessories or claims are still changing, packaging artwork can become obsolete. Approve the product sample first, then confirm the pack dimensions and required text.
A practical approval sequence is:
- choose the SKU and quantity;
- approve the physical product sample;
- define retail-pack structure;
- confirm dieline and required information;
- approve digital artwork;
- approve packaging sample or proof where appropriate;
- freeze the product and packaging specification;
- release bulk production;
- inspect product and pack together.

How to compare two packaging options
Create a simple comparison with columns for standard pack and custom pack. Include unit packaging cost, one-time setup, carton quantity, carton volume, gross weight, production time, retail presentation and any expected effect on damage or conversion.
Do not automatically choose the lowest packaging unit cost. Choose the option that gives the best total commercial result for your channel.
